The Identity Hidden in the Mirror

Since childhood, Piyush had always felt that there was something different about him.

He could never explain it to anyone, but deep inside, he knew that he wasn't like the other boys.

While other boys enjoyed playing cricket and getting into fights, Piyush loved dancing. He was fascinated by colorful clothes. He loved watching his mother and sister getting dressed. Sometimes, he would secretly wear his mother's bangles and try to style his hair.

But what frightened him the most was the way people looked at him.

As the years passed, Piyush turned twenty-one, yet he still had no beard or mustache. His face was delicate and innocent, and even his voice sounded different from other boys.

For the people in his neighborhood, Piyush had become a subject of ridicule.

“Look, the sweet one is coming!”

“He should have been born a girl!”

“I don't know why his parents even had a child like him!”

Every word pierced his heart like an arrow.

Piyush would force a smile and keep walking, but as soon as he reached home, he would lock himself in his room and cry for hours.

For his father, Piyush had become a source of shame.

For the past seven years, his father had barely spoken to him.

They lived under the same roof, yet their relationship felt as if they were complete strangers.

Many times, Piyush would quietly walk up to his father.

“Dad…”

But there would be no response.

His father would hide his face behind the newspaper or simply get up and walk away.

Every time, Piyush's heart would break a little more.

His mother often tried to comfort him.

“Son, don't take your father's words to heart.”

Piyush would simply smile and say,

“Mom, I'm trying.”

But some wounds cannot be healed just by trying.

Piyush had never gone very far with his education. From childhood, he had been fascinated by makeup and styling.

So, he started working at a beauty parlor.

There, he styled women's hair, applied mehndi, and prepared brides for their weddings.

Whenever he got the opportunity to dress a bride, his eyes would light up with a different kind of happiness.

He would style the bride's hair, apply a bindi to her forehead, decorate her hands with mehndi, and finally seat her in front of the mirror wearing a beautiful red sari.

Sometimes, Piyush would simply stare at the bride for a few moments.

A question would quietly arise in his heart—

“If I were a girl too... could I also become someone's bride?”

Then he would immediately become frightened by his own thought.

“No... I shouldn't think like this.”

But the heart doesn't always listen to the mind.

Every time he dressed a bride, that unfulfilled desire inside him grew stronger.

If only I were a girl.

If only someone accepted me.

If only someone looked at me with pride instead of shame.

One evening, Piyush returned home from work.

The house was unusually quiet.

His mother had gone to a neighbor's house, and his sister wasn't home either.

Most importantly, his father was also out.

Piyush stood near the doorway for a while.

Then his eyes fell on his mother's cupboard.

His heart began beating faster.

Slowly, he walked toward it.

He stared at the cupboard for a few moments.

Then, with trembling hands, he opened it.

Inside were several of his mother's saris.

His eyes stopped on a beautiful red sari.

Piyush took it out.

He placed it against himself.

His fingers were trembling.

Then he took out some of his mother's jewelry as well.

For a moment, he felt as though he was committing a terrible crime.

But another voice inside him whispered—

“Just tonight... just once, let yourself see the person you've always wanted to be.”

Piyush went into his room.

He locked the door.

And when he finally stood in front of the mirror...

he could hardly recognize himself.

Wrapped in the red sari, with a delicate bindi on his forehead...

a necklace around his neck...

earrings in his ears...

bangles around his wrists...

and his hair styled to look feminine...

The person standing in the mirror didn't look like the Piyush he knew.

He simply kept staring at himself.

Tears of happiness filled his eyes.

He gently touched the mirror.

“Can I really... look this beautiful?”

For the first time in years, there was a smile on his face without fear behind it.

He imagined—

One day, he would have a wedding of his own.

He would become a bride too.

Someone would hold his hand.

Someone would look at him and say—

“You look so beautiful.”

Piyush lowered his eyes shyly.

And then...

he noticed a shadow behind him in the mirror.

His smile disappeared instantly.

His entire body froze.

Slowly, he looked behind himself through the mirror.

Standing at the doorway...

was his father.

Piyush's breath stopped.

The faint sound of his bangles echoed through the room.

His father's eyes were filled with anger.

An anger so intense that Piyush's entire world seemed to shake.

“Dad…”

That was the only word that came out of his mouth.

His father rushed into the room.

He grabbed Piyush's arm and pulled him violently.

“So this is what you do in this house?”

“Dad, I... I can explain…”

“Shut up!”

His father's furious voice echoed throughout the house.

Tears began rolling down Piyush's cheeks.

He desperately tried to adjust the sari.

“Dad... please forgive me.”

But his father's anger did not lessen.

He dragged Piyush outside in the same condition.

Within moments, his mother and sister came running.

Piyush stood there with his head lowered in shame.

His father pointed toward him and shouted,

“Look! Look at him!”

He turned toward Piyush's mother.

“Is this your son?”

Then he turned toward his sister.

“Or your daughter?”

“Look at him! Is this your brother?”

His voice was filled with disgust.

“I had a son... but what has God given me instead?”

Piyush's mother began crying.

“Please don't say things like that... he's our child.”

“Child?”

His father laughed bitterly.

“He is destroying my honor!”

Piyush was trembling.

He wished the ground would open up and swallow him.

He looked at his mother.

“Mom…”

His mother stepped forward, but his father stopped her.

“From today onward, he has no relationship with this family.”

Piyush felt the ground disappear beneath his feet.

“Dad... please don't throw me out.”

For the first time in seven years, he folded his hands before his father.

“I'll change.”

His voice broke.

“I'll give everything up... just don't throw me out of the house.”

His father looked at him.

But there was no father's love in his eyes.

Only hatred.

“Get out.”

“Dad…”

“Right now!”

Piyush's mother was crying uncontrollably.

His sister was wiping away her tears.

But no one could stop him from leaving.

Piyush looked at his home one last time.

The same home...

where he had spent his childhood.

The same courtyard...

where he had once run behind his mother.

The same door...

that had now been closed to him forever.

Piyush closed his eyes.

Tears rolled down his cheeks.

He gathered the sari around himself and slowly walked onto the street.

He had no idea where he would go.

He had no idea where he would spend the night.

He only knew one thing—

The home he had always believed was his...

had made him homeless tonight.

And perhaps...

this was the night when Piyush's life was about to change forever.

Because the boy who had been thrown out of his home...

was about to begin a journey to discover the identity hidden within him—the identity that the world had never even tried to understand.

But would Piyush ever find someone who would accept him for who he truly was?

Or would the next chapter of his life push him into an even greater struggle?

To be continued...
